Recently I’ve been working with clients in choosing the right CMS for their business and I agree that there is no magic bullet or the perfect Content Management System as each one is broad enough to fill a wide range of projects. In my experience with choosing the right (or the closest to right) CMS, I’ve found that researching the support community for any given CMS is a must and learning about how large or small it is. A quality support community can greatly affect the process and outcome of website. As most of my CMS projects are small to mid sized business I can only speak on non-enterprise level projects.
1. Open Source – WordPress for example has a large user base so the support community is quite responsive. Silverstripe on the other-hand, although stacked full of potential just doesn’t cut it on the support aspect as the community is small and therefor response time is slow.
2. Licenses based – Expression Engine for example charges for their CMS through a licensed based fee. The upside to this is a quality support experience, faster response time, accountability in their product and proper documentation.
All of this also depends to the type of business you have, your website requirements and technical level of your staff. This brings up the concern of usability in regards to the cost of training. Architexture chooses to use well designed, planned and structured content management systems.
In my past experience, applications like SharePoint where visual aesthetics and usability were last on the list of priorities for Microsoft. For me any administration panel must look and function in a way that is intuitive and user friendly.
